Description:
Bogovinska Cave is located in eastern Serbia, on the southeast circumference of the South Kučaj massif, which is part of the big regional Kučaj-Beljanica massif. It is located inside the territory of Boljevac Municipality, in the area of the village of Bogovina, which is situated next to the road from Boljevac to Zaječar. The cave entrance is 360 m above sea level. It is one of the longest caves in Serbia, and the researched channels are in total 6 km in length. Morphologically, Bogovinska Cave is a horizontal subterranean form of a karst relief, inclusive of the channels at three levels. A large segment of Bogovinska Cave’s channels stand for representative examples of erosive channels. The Lower Level – The Sinkhole Channel –is of a permanent flow. The Upper Level – the High Channel – is dry. The Middle Level – the Main Channel, which makes the largest part of the cave – is temporarily hydrologically active. The reason for that is the fact that there is an occasional flow running through the cave and leaving the cave at the cave entrance. This is what assigns the cave the character of a fluvial spring cave – the cave, namely, is a spring from time to time. The deeper parts of the cave abound in cave ornaments. Bogovinska Cave is also characterized by quite an interesting fauna of the cavernicolous arthropods. Particularly significant are the pseudo-scorpion, the terrestrial endemic crab and the subtroglophil insect.
