Description:
The fact that the highway Novi Sad-Irig-Ruma connected with the first rank highway E 70, runs through the central part of the municipality of Irig, provides the opportunity to always have a lot of guests. It is around 55 kilometers away from Belgrade. People say that once, this place was one of the largest cities in Srem, but in 1795 the plague epidemy struck it and killed every second citizen and turned the city into a small town. In the central part of the place there are three orthodox churches from 18th century, which speaks about the prosperity of the city in that period. The oldest and most picturesque church is St Nicholas Church built in 1722 with the architectural style resembling the nearby Hopovo Monastery. Fretworks of iconostas made in 1760 belong to the most interesting ones of that period. Seven kilometres from Irig, on the very ridge of the mountain Fruška gora, there is Iriški Venac (451 m) one of the most interesting picnic places in that area. There is also the National park “Fruška gora”, which presents the most attractive touristic destination in Vojvodina for its natural and social values. However, Irig belongs to the “zone of sanctuaries”. There are 17 orthodox monasteries, built in the period from 15th to 18th century, so people are right to call Fruška gora the North Holy Mountain. The monastery Krušedol is foundation and mausoleum of the Branković family. The richest treasury among all monasteries's on Fruška gora mountain is held inthere. The monastery Grgeteg is also related to the Despots of Branković family, while the Hopovo Temple presents the most monumental edifice among Serbian churches from the period of late Middle Ages. Irig also has specific localities like thermal spa Banja Vrdnik. This place was once a well-known mine. Several streets with typicaly built houses for miners present the most picturesque remains of that not so early period. During the mining, people found springs of mineral water which provided Vrdnik the opportunity to become a spa and healing resort after the closing of the mines. The Srem region together with Fruška gora vineyards belong to the most important parts of Serbia. High-quality vines of Fruška gora can be tasted in any of over 60 vine cellars of private producers, and first of all in the monasteries and villages of Čerević, Neštin, Banoštor, Erdevik...
