Description:
The Church of the Most Holy Mother of God is situated in the village of Donja Kamenica, 15 km to the southeast of Knjaževac town. It is the legacy of an unknown squire and originates from the first half of the 14th century. This church represents the most original and the most valuable artistic monument of the Timok Eparchy. The architecture is a combination of Romanesque art, the Gothic style and Moravian architecture. The paintings in the church are extremely valuable from the aspect of both the style and iconography. Some of the frescoes are unique in the Serbian mediaeval painting. The paintings are considered to have been made by two masters, and the ktetors’ compositions and the portraits of the squires rich in details in the presentation of their vestments are a special treasure. The presentations of the Last Supper, the Annunciation, Mother of God Hodegetria with Christ, the Falling Asleep of the Most Holy Mother of God and the unique presentation of the hugged Holy Warriors Theodor Tyron and Theodor Stratelates on their horses, as well the cycles from the life of St. Paraskevi are of exceptional artistic value. The archaeological research studies that accompanied the conservation works from 1979 to 1981 confirmed the existence of a necropolis with 70 tombs around the church.
